This is a novella narrated by a chef in her mid 30s planning a Thanksgiving dinner for her older brothers and their wives. This month I chose a Holiday novella by a writer I don’t know, but is a novelist, so I was curious what that would bring, and then a biographical piece by William Finnegan, the author of the memoir Barbarian Days, about growing up in surf culture, as well as being a respected journalist. Both of these are Audible Originals for the month of November, which tend to be novellas, short radio plays, or would-be podcasts, etc.

As I like to say to my long-suffering wife ten times a day, “You’re you, aren’t you? Which means that I must be me. On a deeper level, after having written twenty-eight books of fiction, I’m not really sure who I am. As to whether the narrator is me, I’ll have to plead that this is fiction and that the actual events mutated into a kind of dream-the dream that sustains all short stories and novels-and that the characters grew out of that dream. For me, writing this piece was a way of gaining perspective on those events. Readers may recall the nonfiction piece I wrote for The New Yorker back in January (“ The Absence in Montecito”), when our village was devastated by the Thomas Fire and the debris flows that succeeded it, which gave me a point of departure for this story. Something similar happened to you earlier this year-is it safe to assume that the real events were a starting point for this story (though the character is, of course, not you)? Your story in this week’s issue, “ I Walk Between the Raindrops,” is set in Southern California, and is narrated by a man who has just emerged unscathed from a series of mudslides that devastated his town. “All my stories are explorations, evolving organically, day by day, until they find resolution,” Boyle says. 5/23/2023 0 Comments Wolverine by Benjamin PercyLately, he finally went too far and got found out. In the pages of X-Factor and Wolverine - both written by Benjamin Percy since 2020 - he has tortured, framed, and lobotomized in the name of “mutant safety.” He’s created bioweapons, tricked his operatives into killing innocents, and exacerbated a teammate’s addiction so she’d be less likely to pick up on his crimes. But in the Krakoan era, the pressure and power of being put in charge of the “CIA” of a mutant nation has pushed Hank McCoy’s pragmatism and intelligence to full-on sociopathic war criminality. You’re not wrong that version of Henry McCoy is very often present in Marvel Comics as well. He’s the cheerful brainiac of the classic X-Men lineup. If you know the X-Men’s Beast from 1992’s X-Men: The Animated Series or the X-Men movies, you may picture him as a bouncing blue scientist who uses three-syllable words where one-syllable ones would do. 5/22/2023 0 Comments Max einstein booksIt was turning the once-solid Greenland Ice Sheet into a melting slab of leaky Swiss cheese. They had been examining the Jakobshavn Glacier on the west coast of Greenland because global warming was causing its ice to disappear at an alarming rate. Max realized that the fiery redhead could be talking about the earth or their current predicament. “We don’t have much time, Max!” shouted her friend and colleague, the twelve-year-old geoscientist (and certified genius) Siobhan. The ice rapidly melting beneath Max’s feet created snaking rivulets of turquoise blue water that widened into streams that sliced through the ice and made gaping holes that ended up as gushing waterfalls. Wishing some angry crew of mysterious mercenaries wasn’t chasing after her and Siobhan. Wishing she could somehow run faster, that her bulging backpack wasn’t slowing her down.
